PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject flaky crystal, excellent in filterability, high in purity, good in feeling when applied as a stock materials for cosmetics in high yield by reacting specific compounds with each other under specific conditions in a mixed solvent. SOLUTION: This crystal is obtained by reacting arginine with a halide of 8-22C fatty acid to produce N-α-long-chain acyl arginine shown by the formula (R is a 7-21C alkyl or alkenyl) at pH 10.0 to 12.5 in a mixed solvent composed of water and at least one type of alcohol selected from the group consisting of lower alcohols (e.g. ethanol and isopropanol) and polyhydric alcohols, wherein the effluent solution is treated with an acid (e.g. sulfuric or hydrochloric acid) or alkali (e.g. sodium or potassium hydroxide) to dissolve insolubles, and then neutralized and crystallized.
