PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing the objective aromatic diester of carbonic acid in good conversion and selectivity by the ester-interchange of a specific salicylic ester derivative with a specified aromatic diester of carbonic acid in the presence of a catalyst. SOLUTION: Both of a salicylic ester derivative of formula I (X is methyl or ethyl) and an aromatic diester of carbonic acid of formula H (Y is H or a 1-4C alkyl) in which each content of chlorine is <=1,000 ppm, each content of total of iron, copper, lead, chromium, nickel, manganese and cobalt is <=100 ppm, each content of an aromatic monohydroxy compound is >=3 wt.% and each content of water is <=5 wt.%, are subjected to the ester interchange by using one of lanthanum oxide, calcium oxide, lanthanum alkoxide, zinc carboxylate or the like as a catalyst, and the catalyst after the reaction is deactivated to provide the objective aromatic diester of carbonic acid of formula III (Z is H, an 1-4C alkyl, COOCH3 or COOC2 H3 ) in the method for producing the aromatic diester of carbonicacid. |
