PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically and with a high precision grind the only unworn part of the rolling roll having a steep roll curve without using a roll profile measuring device by determining the contact angle of the rolling roll and a grinding wheel, which is found according to the target profile of the unworn part of the rolling roll and the push-in quantity of the grinding wheel according to the width of the grinding wheel and the correction coefficient of the grinding width of the grinding wheel. SOLUTION: The rolling roll having the crown is slid in a rotating state in the axial direction of the rolling roll while pushing it in according to a set push-in quantityΔs of the grinding wheel while rotating the grinding wheel. Hereupon, according to the target profile of the unworn part of the rolling roll, the contact angleθof the rolling roll and the grinding wheel is found over the whole length of the rolling roll. According to the contact angleθ, the width B of the grinding wheel and the preset correction coefficientβof the grinding width of the grinding wheel, a correction quantityΔH to the preset push-in quantityΔa of a target grinding wheel, is found over the whole length of the rolling roll. A quantity obtained by adding the push-in quantityΔa of the target grinding wheel to the correction quantityΔH, is set to the push-in quantityΔs of the grinding wheel.
