<PICT:0346429/III/1> The inner walls and bottoms of hollow articles such as cups or like containers, preferably of absorbent material, are coated or impregnated by uniformly spreading a coating &c. liquid over them, a regular flow consisting solely of such liquid being guided along the surfaces to be treated. In apparatus for carrying out the process, a cup 8 to be treated is placed on a dish 5. A hollow body 1, provided at its upper surface with an opening 2, in close proximity to the bottom of the cup, is secured to an outlet duct 3, which in turn is connected to the dish 5 by a ring-piece 4. To the ring-piece 4 a tube 9 is secured serving to guide the duct 3 inside a box 12, which has a flange and is passed through the cover of a vessel 11 to which it is secured. The vessel 11 contains the coating &c. liquid. A vessel 13 is secured to the box 12 and is provided with a waste-pipe 14. The outlet duct 3 passes through a stuffing box 15 at the base of the vessel 11, and carries a valve 16 which is normally pressed against a seating 18, secured to the box 12, by a spring 17. A spring 19 bears against a ring 20, which limits the descent of the tube 9 and consequently of the outlet duct 3. Liquid is pumped into the vessel 11 through a feeder 14, from a storage tank into which liquid discharged by ducts 3, 14 also returns. If cup 8 is pressed down, the parts 1, 3, 5, 6, 7 and the valve 16 descend. The liquid then passes into box 12, tube 9, and flows through the annular space between the hollow body 1 and the cup 8, returning to the storage tank by opening 2 and outlet duct 3. Removal of the cup 8 causes the valve 16 to shut and the supply of liquid to cease. Surplus liquid returns by the vessel 13 and duct 14. The dish 5 may have a projecting border 7, which may serve to retain or be filled with liquid for impregnating a part of the outer wall of the cup. The hollow body is preferably conical and is provided with ribs to prevent whirls in the ascending liquid. The liquid circulation may be in the reverse direction, and instead of pressure on one side, suction on the other may be employed. |
