PRODUCTION OF CHLOROBENZOYL CHLORIDES

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing chlorobenzoyl chloride useful as an intermediate for an agrochemical, a medicine or a liquid crystal in an industrial scale in a high yield by treating trichloromethylarene with water in the presence of a Lewis acid at <80 deg.C. SOLUTION: A chloro-trichloromethylbenzene of formula I [(n) is 1, 2 or 3], preferably 4-chloro-trichloromethylbenzene or 2,6-dichloro- trichloromethylbenzene is heated to a temperature lower than 80 deg.C (preferably 45-65 deg.C) in the presence of a Lewis acid (e.g. FeCl3 ), and water is slowly added to the stirred obtained solution to provide the objective chlorobenzoyl chloride of formula H in the method for producing chlorobenzoyl chloride.
