The invention concerns a device for powering a motor vehicle headlight discharge lamp (13) comprising a DC/DC converter (11) in the output of which is mounted a capacitor (C0), a DC/AC converter (12) powered by the voltage at said capacitor (C0) terminals, and a module (14) for generating a high voltage breakdown impulse designed to be series-mounted with said discharge lamp in the output of the DC/AC converter. The invention is characterised in that it further comprises a module (15) assisting in heating the discharge lamp electrodes which is designed to be series-mounted with the discharge lamp and the module generating a high voltage impulse and capable of delivering, at the end of the high voltage breakdown impulse. a decreasing voltage which, at said discharge lamp terminals, is added to the capacitor (C0) voltage in the DC/DC converter output.
