The vehicle (1) has an electronic cruise control system (2) which maintains the road speed at a demanded level. In addition to a manual input (3) the system can be operated automatically by an input from a bar code reader (30) and control unit (10). The bar code reader (20) uses a laser beam (22) to scan large bar code signs (30) which are mounted on conventional roadside speed limit signs.
