A cutting assembly (1) adapted for use in line trimmers that employ either a spooled filament or a fixed filament. The cutting assembly (1) comprises a cutting filament (2) consisting of a stainless steel filament (4) coated with a polymeric elastomer (3), steel tube-type collar stops (6), and allen head set screws (8). The cutting performance and capabilities of commercially available vegetation trimmers can be substantially improved by replacing their cutting assembly with the instant cutting assembly (1). The cutting filament (2) does not have a point of attachment within the rotating housing hub (9) located on the bottom of the trimmer, thereby enabling the cutting filament (2) to better follow the rotation of the hub (9), and thereby improve the overall cutting ability of the trimmer.
