The control procedure involves estimating the air pressure, generating a desired temporal change of position of the control element as a function of the estimated air pressure, end establishing a target position of the inlet valve. The element is driven with the desired temporal change of position in order to move the inlet valve in the direction of the established target position. A function is generated which describes a relationship between the air pressure and a maximum stable temporal change of the element position.
