The flatbed knitter has comb sinkers (3) at the needle bed (1) moving at least partially on a plane from the needles (4) on the direction of needle movement. A section of the yarn for at least one following stitch is prepared at the moving comb sinkers. The moving comb sinkers slide or rotate on the needle bed. The moving comb sinkers are controlled by a control unit at the lock slide. The static comb sinkers (2) are next to the moving comb sinkers. The moving comb sinker is a yarn store and feedback sinker. During stitch formation, the moving comb sinkers are extended with their neighboring needles, under control, and are retracted when their adjacent stitches (6-8) are looped. The moving comb sinkers additionally retain the stitches. An Independent claim is included for a flatbed knitting operation, with a controlled movement of the moving comb sinkers so that a yarn section is retained when a stitch (6-9) is formed at least at one neighboring needle.
