A container is sterilized using low-pressure plasma before it is filled with a product and sealed, all processes taking place within the sterilization chamber. The container and its closure are first placed within the sterilization chamber which is then evacuated and sealed. A process gas is then introduced to the chamber and ionized to generate a low-pressure plasma which is maintained for an adequate period, thereby sterilizing the container and its closure. This process also sterilizes all surfaces within the sterilization chamber, and projecting fixtures. The sterilization chamber is then repressurized by a sterile oxygen-free gas to a level slightly above ambient pressure, suitable for filling the container. A swivel-mounted filling tube is then inserted into the container which is filled. The tube is withdrawn and the sterile closure applied. The filled, sterile container is removed from the chamber.
