The band (2b) is broken up, resting on a conveyer belt (10). It is broken transversely and longitudinally, with respect to the conveying direction. It is drawn into a gap, to be pressed between a hard- and a flexible body. The hard body is a separating roller and the flexible body a tensioned conveyor belt or counter-roller. The separating roller exerts pressure on the moving band, also altering the direction of conveying, causing transverse breakage into strips. Indentations are produced by the separating roller. As the band direction changes, the indentations are modified, with breakage into strips (2c). The separating roller has a smooth or profiled surface. The roller (6) has ribs running parallel to its axis. A following roller has circumferential ribs (71). The size of pellets produced, is modified by pressure variation and/or the nature of profiling.
