The invention provides complexes of formula (I) where: N is nitrogen; X1 and X2 are, independently of one another, actinides; R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 are, independently of one another, (-CH2-)a (where a is between 1 and 5), or halogen substituted forms thereof; and R7, R8, R9, R10, R11 and R12 are, independently of one another, -SiMe3, -SiMe2R13, -SiMeR13R14 or -SiR13R14R15, where Me is -CH3 and R13, R14 and R15 are, independently of one another, selected from phenyl, phenol, -(CH2)bC(CH3)3, -(CH2)bCHCH3(CH2)cCH3, -(CH2)bCH3, (where b and c are, independently of one another, 0 to 5) or halogen or phenolic substituted forms thereof, together with the uses of such compounds and intermediates and methods for their production. The complexes are particularly useful as nitrogen fixation agents, for the production of precursers for ammonia production and for inserting nitrogen into compounds during synthesis reactions.
