A hollow drum (1) on a horizontal axle (13) has a circumferential groove, which is covered with dust, grit or liquid, on its inner surface and a pickup device in its hollow space. The drum is set going, so that a vehicle tire rolls with its surface (12) touching the bottom of the groove. An enclosed wall stretches radially inwards across its entire circumference, forming a tread channel for picking up material to determine a vehicle's status.
