<p>A sealed chuck assembly (10) having a hollow cylindrical chuck body (12) including a radially disposed front wall (26) and a plurality of master jaws (16) supported on the chuck body (12) to move radially within openings (32) in the front wall and relative to the chuck body in response to operation of a jaw actuating mechanism (48, 49, 50) contained within the chuck body (12). A canopy plate (20) attached to the chuck body overlies the front wall (26) and has apertures (58) therethrough in general registry with the openings. The master jaws (16) are exposed within the apertures (58) to facilitate attachment of a top jaw (14) to each master jaw (16). Annular sealing members (22) disposed between the rear surface of the canopy plate (20) and forwardly facing surfaces (56) on the master jaws (16) seal each of the openings in all positions of the master jaws (16) relative to the chuck body (12). Top jaws (14) may be secured to and removed from the master jaws (16) without disturbing the sealing members (22) so that the openings (32) in the front wall (26) of the chuck body (12) remain in sealed condition at all times.</p> |
