The fixing element (10) for a foot mat (52) fits in a thin floor covering (48). It has a first anchoring part (12) carrying spike anchoring elements (20) to dig into the floor covering, and a second anchoring part (14, 16) with rising anchoring tongues (34) running round it, which can be turned by a ratchet in the opposite direction to the first anchoring part to force the tongues into the floor covering, thus securing the fixing element against riding up.
