Preparation of 2-nitroguanidine derivatives (I) comprises reacting a 2-nitroimino-hexahydro-1,3,5-triazine derivative (II) with an amine (III). Preparation of 2-nitroguanidine derivatives of formula (I) comprises reacting a 2-nitroimino-hexahydro-1,3,5-triazine derivative of formula (II) with an amine of formula (III): R<1> = H or 1-4C alkyl; R<2> = H, 1-6C alkyl, 3-6C cycloalkyl or CH2R<3>; R<3> = 2-5C alkenyl or alkynyl; phenyl, cyanophenyl or nitrophenyl; halophenyl with 1-3 halogens; phenyl substituted by 1-3C alkyl, 1-3C haloalkyl, 1-3C alkoxy or 1-3C haloalkoxy; 3-pyridyl; 5-thiazolyl optionally substituted by 1-2 of 1-3C alkyl, 1-3C haloalkyl, cyclopropyl, halocyclopropyl, 2-3C alkenyl, 2-3C alkynyl, 2-3C haloalkenyl, 2-3C haloalkynyl, 1-3C haloalkoxy, 1-3C alkylthio, 1-3C haloalkylthio, allyloxy, propargyloxy, allylthio, propargylthio, haloallyloxy, haloallylthio, halogen, CN or NO2; or 3-pyridyl substituted by 1-4 of 1-3C haloalkyl, cyclopropyl, halocyclopropyl, 2-3C alkenyl, 2-3C alkynyl, 2-3C haloalkenyl, 2-3C haloalkynyl, 1-3C haloalkoxy, 1-3C alkylthio, 1-3C haloalkylthio, allyloxy, propargyloxy, allylthio, propargylthio, haloallyloxy, haloallylthio, CN, NO2, 1-3C alkyl, 1-3C alkoxy or halogen; Het = optionally substituted aromatic or nonaromatic mono- or bicyclic heterocyclyl; R<4> = optionally substituted 1-10C alkyl, 3-6C cycloalkyl, phenyl, aralkyl or CH2Het'; Het' = (un)saturated 5- or 6-membered heterocyclyl containing N, O and/or S; R<5> = optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl or CH2Het'.
