The invention relates to a catalyst (4) and a method for purifying exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine (1) operating with excess air. The catalyst (4) has an active mass made of the oxides TiO2, V2O5, CaO and SiO2, in addition to WO3 and/or MoO3. Such active mass has the property of equally reducing nitrogen oxide and hydrocarbons using the SCR method. By adding elements from the group Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru and Ir in any inorganic form, the CO oxidation activity of such mass can be enhanced.
