Bentonite based drilling mud consists of a phosphonate compound of formula (I) R1, R2 and R3 = H; OH, a 1-8 C alkyl optionally substituted by NR4R5 or by a phenyl group; a phenyl or a phosphono group R2 and R3 can form a phenyl with the carbon they are attached to R4 and R5 are H; or a 1-6 C alkyl optionally substituted by an amino; A = H, Na, or K. This compound is different from aminotrismethylene phosphonic acid.
