The steam heated roller has a multi-path valve in the outflow system to allow high pressure steam to be passed through to flush out collected condensation. The steam heated roller has a multi-path valve (9) between the heating zone structure (2,3) and the outflow channel (11). In the first setting, the heating zones (2,3) are linked to the outflow (11) and the condensation collection zone (12). In a second setting, the link to the heating zones (2,3) is broken to give a connection between the condensation collection zone (12) and the pressure steam system (22,23) and the outflow channel (11). The steam system has a pressure store (22), with a branch connection (18) to the outflow (11). A non-return valve (15) is in the outflow (11) channel, between the branch connection (18) and the multi-path valve (9), which opens in the outflow direction. A change-over switch (19) in the branch connection (18) links the pressure store (22) either with the outflow channel (11) or the valve (9). The outflow channel (11) has a control valve assembly to link the outflow (11) either to a low pressure channel or the steam pressure channel. The pressure store (22) is at an end side of the roller (1), in a ring round the roller journal (6). The valve (9) is held in the first position by centrifugal force, which is overcome by steam pressure to move the valve into the second position. The steam flow into the feed connection (5,4) is through a pressure difference, in normal working, and by pressure control during water extraction. A number of condensation collection zones (12) have a corresponding number of multi-path valves (9) distributed round the peripheral direction of the roller.
