The invention relates to a method for detecting the temperature of at least one battery in the electrical system of an automobile. The temperature of the battery is indirectly calculated depending at least on the temperature of the motor and the environmental temperature. Said temperatures are normally detected and calculated by other control devices, e.g. by the motor control devices. The readings are sent by said devices via the internal data bus of the vehicle to another control device, e.g. the electrical system control device of the vehicle in order to calculate the temperatures of the battery. Models are used in the calculation of the battery temperature, e.g. fuzzy logic or an observer function. At least the temperature of the motor or the environment is used as input parameters. In addition, sunshine duration and intensity during idle time are taken into account, whereby said parameters are not measured but are computationally detected.
