[Classes 20 (iii) and 107.] In road-surface traffic-control markings of the type comprising a translucent member located over illuminating means embedded in the road surface 1, the translucent member 4 is of tapered formation and is mounted with its larger face upwards in a correspondingly tapered frame 3 which screws into, or is otherwise detachably secured to, a metal or earthenware lamp container 2. The slab 4 is preferably of a material less brittle than glass, as described in Specification 360,048, and may be mounted over a reinforcing glass slab 5; the slab 4 may also have a curved or ribbed upper surface, and may incorporate a grating if desired. The lamp 6 may be of the filament or discharge type, and a single unit may embody red and green lamps adapted to be lighted alternatively from a control station; the lamp-holder 6a is preferably embedded in wax 9 within a container 10, which, as described in Specification 360,049, is itself preferably mounted on a pad 11 of sponge rubber or other resilient material, or alternatively on a spiral spring, to prevent damage to the lamp arising from vibration. The units may be rectangular instead of circular, the frame 3 being screwed down to the container and being provided with a flange which engages a groove in the upper surface of the container, and ensures a water tight joint. Washers of rubber, pitch, &c. may be inserted between the various components, and the edge of the translucent member may be protected by an upstanding rubber member or raised projections formed on the frame. The units may be arranged at spaced intervals to form traffic indications, the intervening spaces being filled up if desired by aluminium strips or opaque blocks, or characters may be formed on or in the translucent material. Ventilating, drainage and heat-dissipating means may be provided within the containers. A keyhole 7 and locking pin 8 may be provided in the frame 3. Specification 346,335 also is referred to.
