PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an endoscope which makes illumination using an illuminating means having a low illuminance such as a light emitting diode, whereby even a dark image in the overall illuminance because of long distance from the object to be photographed can be given a satisfactory contrast. SOLUTION: A photographing signal generated by a solid photographing element 23 of an electronic endoscope 2 is turned into a video signal by a video signal processing part 10 installed in a video processor 3. For example, when illumination is made using light emitting diode 25, the fact that illumination is conducted by light emitting diode 25 is sensed by an illumination method sensing part 11, followed by an emphasizing oreration made by an emphasis processing part 12, and an image of a human body cavity or an image of a thin pipe of a structure is displayed on a display monitor and is recorded in an image filing device.
