PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To arbitrarily set the magnification of a character in lateral and longitudinal directions, to reduce the pattern data, which are required for the operation, to an absolute minimum and to conduct a compensation operation in a relatively short time by enlarging a bit map type first character font to constitute of a second character font and constituting of a third character font by compensating for the second character font. SOLUTION: In order to enlarge an original font to a set magnification, a retrieving pattern group 18, which is provided with plural patterns 16 to specify the dot intervals required to compensate for a first character font 10 that is required for the compensation during an enlarging, and a compensation dot pattern 20, which is used for the compensation, are set. Then, patterns 17, which are same as the patterns 16 that are included in the group 18, are detected in the font 10. Then, corresponding positions 19 are specified in a second character font 12 in the detected patterns 17. Then, the positions 19 in the specified font 12 are compensated for using the pattern 20. |
