A label is attached to material, e.g. the ear of a pig (30), in two stages under manual control (41). The pneumatic ram (17) moves the slider (6) to the left. Profiled surfaces (7,8) close the jaws (10,14). A second ram (38,39) forces the upper jaw (10) downwards so that the punch (33) penetrates the ear to pin both sides of the label together.
