The tobacco plant stems are placed in a conveyor (4) mounted on variable length legs (5,6). The conveyor holds the stems vertically upright so that the leaves are spread out downwards. The plants are then conveyed in front of persons who grab each leaf and exert a light downwards pressure, thus detaching the leaf from the stem.
