The lever comprises two shafts (1a,1b) coupled together by a ball and socket joint (3,4). The upper cup holds a small spring (7) loaded ball (6) which presses down on the ball joint (3) of the lower shaft. The top of the ball joint (3) is recessed to receive the sprung loaded ball so that, when the two shaft halves are aligned the ball sits in the recess and holds the shaft rigid. Excess lateral force applied to the top shaft will cause the joint to break and the two halves pivot.
