PROCESS FOR PRODUCING LIGHTLY COLORED p-VINYLPHENOL POLYMER

A process for efficiently and economically producing a high-molecular, lightly colored polymer having excellent permeability to visible light and far ultraviolet light. The process comprises polymerizing p-vinylphenol alone or with a vinyl compound copolymerizable therewith in the presence of a catalyst for cationic polymerization or a radical polymerization initiator to produce a vinylphenol polymer, the monomer(s) to be polymerized being a p-vinylphenol-containing fraction obtained by subjecting a feed material comprising p-vinylphenol to vacuum flash distillation in the presence of a phenol compound containing no unsaturated side chains and of water.
