The device to make sheet metal connections by seam welding using a laser beam has a pressure element working on one of the sheets and an end-side mouthpiece of a welding wire feed assigned to the laser beam adjoining the direct welding site. The end-side mouthpiece of the welding wire feed is integrated in the pressure element. The pressure element (4) contains a device for a protective gas supply to the welding site. The pressure element is mounted at the lower end (3) of a carrier (2) of the welding device and the protective gas supply and/or the welding wire feed takes place through at least one channel in the carrier and the pressure element.
