The present invention is directed to the use of a water-soluble tertiary phosphine as a reducing agent for altering the physical structure of hair. In this regard, phosphines can be used as the reactive agent needed to break disulfide bonds within an insoluble substrate, namely hair. This initiates the reducing sequence leading to the practice of permanent hair waving and hair straightening. |
