A catalyst comprising a porous organic or mineral support and an acidic phase comprising the cpd. B(OSO2CF3)3 and≥1 acid chosen from H2SO4 and CF3SO3H : the support is impregnated with the acid phase. The catalyst consists of particles of mean dia. 0.1-150 mu m and the compsn. of the acid phase is: 0.1-70% of B(OSO2CF3)3, 0-90% H2SO4, 0-90% CF3-SO3H. The prepn. and use of the catalyst is also claimed.
