A flywheel assembly with input/output drive gear (17;8) has several distributed satellite masses (8) attached to low mass carrier disks (6;7) and arranged concentrically equi-distant about a common rotational shaft (4). The shaft (4) is hollow and carries a lined brake disk (11) axially slidable against the rotating satellite flywheel by an actuator piston contained (14) within the shaft.
