A trailer mounted unattended speed awareness and vehicle speed surveillance apparatus comprises a speed detection device connected to an electromagnetic radiation transceiver such as a radar speed gun adapted to be aimed toward oncoming or receding traffic so as to detect the speed of a moving vehicle and produce an output speed signal and display the speed to the driver of the moving vehicle. Also included in the trailer is a video camera aimed toward the oncoming traffic which is connected to a video recorder. A triggering device receives the speed output signal from the radar gun and automatically triggers operation of the video camera and the video recorder when the speed output signal exceeds a predetermined value. An overlay generator connected to the speed detection device, the video camera and the video recorder, receives the speed output signal and produces an overlay of the date, time, and the oncoming vehicle speed onto the video image being recorded by the video recorder. The camera and recorder operate for a predetermined period of time long enough to capture the sequence and surroundings of the speeding event for later use in law enforcement. |
