The present invention provides methods and apparatuses for integrating real time and best effort communications over a common medium (202(0) - 202(n)). The ability to integrate different types of communications also allows the present invention to integrate sub-networks (110, 140) utilizing different physical link layer communication protocols. While a common network layer protocol is preferred, the physical or link layer communication protocols may be any type of packet based communication protocols (171, 181, 200).
