The invention relates to a method and a device for determining the surface friction coefficient in bodies, especially catheters. According to the inventive method, the catheter (1) to be tested is pulled through a gel-like, soft viscous elastic substance (2) and the frictional force required for this purpose is measured. The viscous elastic substance is subjected to a defined pressure so that a defined surface normal force is exerted upon the surface of the catheter. By subjecting the substance to a predetermined, defined pressure, surface pressures on each surface element of the surface of the catheter are exactly predetermined and can be maintained constant. By applying a constant pressure on the surface, the total normal force can be kept constant and the friction coefficient can be determined for the diameter and consistency of each catheter. The determination of the friction coefficient can be reproduced and solely depends on the friction applied on the surface.
