The printer has a type wheel carriage movable along a guide rail parallel to a print roller and a transport lock (6) preventing unauthorized movement. The transport lock engages the path of motion of the carriage through an aperture in a lower pan (2) with a first section and fixes the carriage, whilst a second section protrudes above the lower pan. When setting up the printer with the transport lock not removed, the second section (8) provides a visible indication. The first section (10) has protrusions (11,12) which engage a locking section on the lower pan and/or on the carriage when twisted.
