The heating element has metallic walls in the honeycomb body flow channels (2) for the medium to be heated. The walls are alternately electrically contacted at the ends in checkered fashion, leaving the channel cross-sections free. The metallic walls of the channels are alternately connected to the two poles of a current source exclusively via end structured area and edge metallization patterns.
