PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively obtain a high-purity cinnamic acid ester useful as a synthetic intermediate for an antioxidant for plastics, an ultraviolet light absorber, a medicine, an agrochemical and a perfume industrially readily in a high yield. SOLUTION: A benzaldehyde is condensed with an acetic acid ester in the presence of a base, a reaction mixture is treated with an acid and a 3-alkoxy-3- phenylpropionic acid ester in the mixture is converted into a cinnamic ester of general formula III [X<1> to X<2> are the same or different and each hydrogen, a halogen, a 1-6C alkyl, alkoxy, haloalkyl, haloalkoxy, alkylthio, alkylsulfinyl, alkylsulfonyl, alkylamino or a di(1-6C alkyl)amino group, nitro group, cyano group, phenyl group, phenoxy group or amino group and adjoining substituent groups of X<1> to X<2> may form a 5- to 6-membered saturated or unsaturated ring which may contain 1-4 oxygen, nitrogen or sulfur atoms]. |
