PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To continue discharge while generating self-discharge so as to increase light emission frequency to the applied pulse number by storing charge ionized by first discharge generated by the rise of voltage, onto a dielectric layer, generating second discharge in the case of stopping current application, and applying voltage to the other electrode before generated space charge is neutralized and eliminated, to discharge. SOLUTION: When first sustained pulse 58 is applied to a Y-electrode, effective voltage obtained by adding discharge maintaining voltage V1 to potential difference of charge stored in a dielectric is generated between X-, Y-electrodes, and when the effective voltage becomes discharge start voltage V2 or more, discharge is generated. Charge generating space by discharge during a current flowing period t1 is drawn onto the dielectric to store charge. In a current stop period t2, the effective voltage becomes discharge start voltage V2 or more, so that self-discharge is generated, and stored charge is extinct, but when voltage is applied in the state of charge remaining in space, discharge can be performed even when the effective voltage is the discharge start voltage V2 or less. |
