PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new polynucleotide having high identity with the nucleic acid encoding pheS polypeptide having a specific amino acid sequence, and useful for e.g. screening antibacterial compounds and treating/diagnosing Chlpmydia trachomatis infection. SOLUTION: This polynucleotide is a new isolated polynucleotide such as a polynucleotide having >=70% identity with the nucleic acid encoding the polypeptide containing an amino acid sequence of the formula or a polynucleotide having >=70% identity with the polynucleotide encoding the same mature polypeptide as that expressed by pheS gene included in Chlamydia trachomatis strain, and is useful for e.g. screening antibacterial compounds and treating/diagnosing Chlamydia trachomatis infection. This polynucleotide is obtained by probing the chromosome DNA library of Chlamydia trachomatis with a labeled oligonucleotide derived from partial sequence.
