PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To raise the light amplification factor, by adding a rare earth activator, which effects fluorescent action and light amplifying action, and transition metal ions such as Cu<+> ions, or the like, which change the gain distribution of light amplification, to the Ge-Ga-S glass as glass substrate. SOLUTION: This glass composition includes a glass substrate, an activator, which effects a fluorescent action an a light amplification action, being added the glass substrate, and transition metal ions which are added within the rang of 0.01 mol.% to 0.2 mol.%. Then, for the glass substrate, Ge-Ga-S glass is utilized, and for the activator, lanthanum rare earth ions are desirable, and especially, Pr<3+> ions, where the addition effect of transition metal is clearest, are utilized. Moreover the transition metal ions effect the action of shifting the gain distribution of light amplification, and Pd<4+> , Ag<+> , ions, etc., are possible, but Cu<+> ions are desirable. Then, optical fibers 530 consisting of this glass composition can be utilized, and the light amplification efficiency can be raised. |
