PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a positive electrode active material for an alkaline storage battery with high capacity density by increasing the number of reaction electrons of nickel hydroxide. SOLUTION: A positive electrode active material is a β-Ni(OH)2 type nickel oxide (containing hydroxide) containing Mn in a solid solution or eutectic state, the content of Mn is 1% or more but 12% or less in an atomic ratio based on the sum of the total metal element, and the average oxidation number of the Mn is 3.3 valence or more. The ratio A2 /A1 of the integrated intensity A2 of a peak existing in 2θ=18-20 deg. to the integrated intensity A1 existing in 2θ=37-40 deg. of X ray diffraction using CuKαbeams is specified to 1.25 or less. |
