PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a modem where a server informs a user of a client side of the presence of, e.g. a new mail without imposing a communication cost on the user. SOLUTION: On occurrence of an incoming phone call including a call signal and a caller number notice from a public line network 1, a caller number acquisition section 22 of the modem 2 acquires a subscriber number informed by the caller number notice. When the caller number acquisition section 22 acquires the caller subscriber number, a caller discrimination section 23 discriminates whether or not the subscriber number is stored in a registered caller storage table 24, and reads a notice method corresponding to the subscriber from the registered caller storage table 24 when the section 23 discriminates that the subscriber number is stored. Then a caller notice section 26 informs the user of the reception of a phone call from the caller with the subscriber number by turning on an LED 27, for example, according to the notice method read from the caller discrimination section 23.
