PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the visual angle characteristics of display contrast and display color and to improve high-speed display without lowering display contrast by adjusting the optical characteristics of a transparent film so that an entire optical compensation film can satisfy specified conditions. SOLUTION: The optical compensation film is composed of at least one transparent film and an optical anisotropic layer containing a disk-shaped chemical compound. Then, the optical characteristics of the transparent film are adjusted so that the entire optical compensation film can satisfy an inequality I of 50<= (n1+n2)/2-n3}×d2<=1,000 and an inequality II of Re1-20<=|Re2|×N<=Re1+20 for correcting a front retardation Re1 of a liquid crystal cell. In the inequalities I and II, n1-n3 express the main refraction factors of the optical compensation film and respectively have large refraction factors in this order, Re2 expresses the front retardation of the entire optical compensation film, and Re1. expresses the front retardation of the liquid crystal cell.
