PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove an obstacle in the operation of liquid crystal and to attain improvement in the stability and reliability of display by using a liquid crystal material for which particles containing and fixing a pigment and the liquid crystals are dispersed in a medium. SOLUTION: A grid-shaped dam 2 having fixed thickness concurrently being a spacer is formed on the surface of a substrate 1, and a liquid crystal material 4 is sealed into an independent cell 3 surrounded with the dam 2 while being covered with an opposed substrate 5. The liquid crystal material 4 to be used in this case is composed of the liquid crystal, a particle containing and fixing the pigment such as a microcapsule containing a pigment or a particle mixed with or adsorbing (dyed with) and fixing the pigment, for example, and the medium dispersing them. As the medium to be used for dispersing the liquid crystal, capsule and particle, a colorless, transparent and electrically insulated material not to solve or swell the liquid crystal, microcapsule or particle is desired, especially, it is preferable that its refractive index is close to that of the liquid crystal, and it is preferable that the difference between the refractive indices of the medium and the liquid crystal is <=0.1. |
