The use of manganese at a molar ratio of manganese : rhodium of (0.2 to 20) : 1 to stabilise the rhodium catalyst during the rhodium catalysed carbonylation of alkyl alcohols and/or recovery of carbonylation product therefrom at low partial pressure of carbon monoxide of less than or equal to 7 bar.
