Compositions and methods for enhancing cell survival are provided. Such compositions comprise A6LA5A12 polypeptides, and variants thereof, that inhibit stress-induced cell death. The polypeptides may be used, for example, in the prevention and treatement of a variety of conditions associated with oxidative damage and cell death.
