The claw coupling has a drive element (32) and a driven element (34) with adjacent surfaces (46,48) that are fixed with respect to each other when the elements are being driven together. The coupling has two sets of matching shoulders (72) on each surface and two sets of claws (56) between the surfaces and movable between engaged and disengaged positions. Each set of claws enables engagement for one of two opposing rotation directions. A clamp arrangement (50) forces the claws into the engaged position. A control element (58) is movable between two positions in which one or other set of claws is retracted in concert with deceleration devices for the control element.
