The engine, which is made of metal or ceramic or a combination thereof, has an arrangement for direct fuel injection into a stratified charge chamber. The outlet valve (3) of metal, conducting or non-conducting ceramic, is enclosed by a cooling channel (1), protrudes wholly or partially into the stratified charge chamber (13) and is inclined with respect to the center of the cylinder. The injection nozzle (11) and plug (12) are arranged to the left and right of the cylinder axis beneath the stratified charge chamber so that the injected fuel impinges on the valve plate and is ignited by the plug after mixing with the compressed air. The fuel is forced over the piston basin (8) into the compression chamber and is activated by the plugs (4,7) after a time offset specified by the engine management system. The outlet valve is the earth electrode, the plug only having a positive electrode.
