PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel for bar, causing no blowhole with low Al content and low additive quantity of Ca and capable of preventing the occurrence of precipitation in a casting nozzle at the time of continuous casting of billets and particularly open pouring, and a method of manufacture of the steel. SOLUTION: The steel for bar has a composition consisting of, by weight, >0.35-1.0% C, 0.10-0.35% Si, 0.40-1.00% Mn, 0.005-0.03% Ti, 0.0005-0.0030% Ca, <=0.005% Al, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities. It is preferable to regulate Ti content to 0.05+0.35/([%Si]+[%C]+[%Mn] deg.-o.85)×0.004} to 0.03-[%Ca]×2}% and Ca content to 0.0005 to 0.0025%.
